This question has come up recently in all of my Accelerator meetings. What is enough? In every single case, the member asking the question had recently achieved something big—something REALLY big. She won a prestigious award, or landed more clients than she ever thought possible, or hit a revenue target that seemed years away only a few short months ago. And the interesting thing that happened for each of these women is that once the initial euphoria wore off, they were all left feeling a little confused. They realized intellectually that they had achieved something significant, but they didn’t suddenly stop worrying about their businesses or their finances or the million other things we all worry about. In fact, they all admitted that by the next day, they were focused on the next big goal, the next big achievement.
And while that’s great, it had them all wondering:
WHAT IS ENOUGH?
The truth is, I don’t have an answer for that. It is different for each person. That is the beauty of being a business owner. You get to decide what is enough. And you also get to change your answer when you want.
There are a few important things to keep in mind when you find yourself asking this question. First, is what you are doing right now working for you? I mean this in all ways: financially, logistically, emotionally. If the answer is no, then change it.
Second, what is your priority right now? Is it to make more money? Is it to make sure your product or service delivery is top notch? Is it to recruit and groom new talent?
Your priority should guide your goals.
And finally, please give yourself permission to decide that where you are right now is enough. Most of us feel so much pressure to constantly be adding more tasks, more to-dos, more goals. That’s not always necessary. Maybe where you are right now is already enough.
