What Did You Learn This Year?

Last week, we kicked off our third accelerator group. I have literally been waiting anxiously for months to have our first meeting; that’s how excited I am about this new group of women, their ambition, their goals. What a tremendous experience it will be to watch them apply themselves and work towards meeting those goals.

Preparing for this new group made me think about our last two groups, and my favorite question I love to ask at the end of our program: What did you learn this year?

And also, what did I learn while teaching them this year?

Sometimes I like to joke that my favorite answer is from the women who say, “I learned to love my numbers” or “I learned to understand my financials.” What you hear is true. Learning to love your numbers is a game changer.

But I also love the women who say they learned how to plan ahead. How to know when, during the course of the year, their business can afford to grow (mostly because access to money is still very hard for women to get, so this one is a huge deal.)

But my absolute favorite line this year was from a woman who worked really hard to understand her business, to grow her business, to take her business from in-store sales only to online sales. And at the end of all of that, she said, “I learned that I really love my business. I really love what I do.”

Can it get any better than that? Hell no.

You know what I learned from teaching all of these women over the course of 2015?

I learned that the ones who had the most success, the ones who made the most progress (both personally and professionally), were the ones who chose to succeed. They had walked into our accelerator in 2015 completely and entirely convinced that they were going to learn something and change their business in 2015. It didn’t matter how big or small the business, those women were the ones who made the biggest changes. And the ones who were there just to learn, well, they did learn, but learning didn’t necessarily translate to results.

I wonder what our new cohort of women business owners will learn in 2016? Stay tuned for their answers!

Frederique is passionate about helping women take their businesses to the next level of growth and success. As founder and CEO of Her Corner, she applies her entrepreneurial spirit & management consulting background and business operations expertise to give women the springboard they need to move forward.

Her Corner grew out of a lightbulb moment Frederique had in 2011. After realizing that access to other motivated and ambitious women business owners was lacking in her existing network she decided to do something about it – and Her Corner was born.
