Message from the Founder, What's New at Her Corner

Time to Change Your Inner Dialogue

I was talking with my leadership and business coach about a specific business strategy that, upon further review, wasn’t quite right. And I found myself saying to her, “I should really know better by now.”

“Should you,” she asked? “Have you noticed that there is an inverse relationship between mastery of a topic and the frustration we feel around it?”

Wait … what?

I knew she was saying something important, but I had no idea what she was talking about.

Apparently, the more we know about a certain subject or topic, the more frustrated we become about how little we know. But that frustration is a little misplaced.

Many, many years ago, Aristotle said, “The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.”

And if you’ve ever spent any time with grandparents or even great-grandparents, you know how wonderfully aware they have become about this exact statement.

So if we know this statement to be true, why is it that frustration at ourselves is what comes out?  But not only frustration, also a belief that we should know better, that we should be better than this, that we should ….

Once again, here we are. I was beating up on myself.

And so all of a sudden I understood what she was saying, and I realized I needed to reframe my thinking and my words.

I wonder how many of us fall into this same trap. Probably more than we care to admit! So how can we reframe our thinking? How can we support ourselves? And can we forgive ourselves for not knowing everything?
