These Four Go-To's Will Save Us All From Ourselves
In her book, Drop the Ball: Achieving More by Doing Less, author Tiffany Dufu says that working women have to implement regular and repeatable practices that allow us to flourish.
She calls them the 4 go-tos. They are:
Going to Exercise - building your stamina
Going to Lunch - building your network
Going to Events - building your visibility
Going to Sleep - building your renewal
Exhaustedly many of us quickly cast these go-tos aside as must-eventually-dos but we owe it to ourselves to streamline our priorities so that these four career improving tasks fall at the near top on a reliably consistent basis.
As women who work, earn, shop, bake, birth and more for the advancement of all of humanity, why are putting our professional aspirations in jeopardy with contact lists that collect dust, cocktail dresses that never get a night out and bodies that are stressed out, immobile, and sleep deprived.
I know I’ve rationalized my way out of countless mixers, lunches with peers who “will understand” why I can’t make it…again, and forced myself to stay up late and snooze through my morning barre class.
But ladies, we’re only hurting ourselves. We already suffer the consequences of employment gaps in favor of motherhood, wage gaps in favor of “being a team player”, and higher rates of illness and chronic diseases from our bodies rebelling against how negligent we treat them.
This month I’m resolving to partake in at least one of the four go-tos. With the holidays coming up it may be just the time to catch up with an old colleague or request a yoga class package as a gift from the family. Whatever you choose to do, I’m here to hold you accountable.
Get it done,
Naomi D.
