The Single Best Goal I Have Ever Heard

It was a funny place to hear about a life goal. I was sitting in a church listening to my friend give a eulogy for her father.

But something she said made me realize, without a doubt:

That is the single best goal I have ever heard.

What was that goal? My friend was sharing how she had recently found her father in his library, reading a book and drinking a glass of wine. When she walked in, he said the most hilarious thing:

“I just love my own company, don’t you?”

It sounded like such a funny thing to say out loud. But, I thought, what a wonderful statement to make about ourselves! And it can apply to the decisions we make about the businesses we run, too.

Here’s an example: Last week, I was working with a woman who needed to let an employee go. She was struggling to come up with the right amount of severance and experiencing angst over having this difficult conversation. She consulted Her Corner, and we agreed that what really mattered was that she be proud of the decision she made and that she could go to bed knowing she had done the right thing in the right way.

In many ways, the single most important goal that any one of us should have—whether as business owners or simply as good humans—is to love our own company. Isn’t that what it’s all about at the end of the day? To be proud of who we are and the decisions we make.
