The Golden Rule
Did you know we have a Golden Rule at Her Corner?
It’s the single most important, no one had better ever break it or we’ll have a big problem sort of rule.
And it’s pretty simple: Do not judge others.
Maybe you think it’s our Golden Rule because we want to be kind and patient with everyone and, while that’s true, it’s not why this is Her Corner’s Golden Rule.
IT’S THE RULE BECAUSE I AM OBSESSED WITH WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THIS RULE IS IN PLACE AND PEOPLE FEEL SAFE AND ABLE TO BE VULNERABLE.
Because thanks to this rule, the single best thing about Her Corner happens again and again. And it’s the best part of my job. If this rule weren’t in place, I probably wouldn’t even do this job anymore because I’d be bored.
For those of you, like me, who are lifelong learners, one thing we love more than anything is to continuously have our minds opened to new ways of seeing things. It is one of my greatest joys when I feel like I have experienced a paradigm shift and gotten a completely new perspective.
And what I’ve learned is that when women know that they are in a safe place, when they know they can be open and honest about their fears, their experiences, their backgrounds, their lives, and their companies—when they know they won’t be judged—they will share with you how they see the world.
And more often than not, it’s not how you were brought up to see the world. They share a perspective you may never have considered. And you get to ponder that perspective, turn it around in your head, and ask yourself why you never considered it yourself. You get to decide whether you agree or disagree.
I am absolutely obsessed with perspective, and I cannot get enough of it.
It is the outcome that fuels my curiosity and drive to work even when the business feels hard. And it is one of the reasons that our Golden Rule is in place and can never be broken.
