It’s such a cliché, I know. But why in the world is it so hard to remember that money talks, especially as business owners?
So many business owners spin their wheels thinking about their business from a positioning perspective:
How will I message this? What will my customers think if I kill this product? What will my friends think if I shut down the business? Will I be a failure if I cut back on our offerings and just focus on one area? (Let’s not even talk about the fact that generally this may be better for you personally, too….)
Here’s the thing: IT DOESN’T MATTER.
Money talks. That’s the bottom line.
If the business isn’t generating income, if you’re investing in it and not seeing a return, if you’re spending more and more time on it and getting less and less back, then who cares how you’re going to “message this.” Everyone, and I mean everyone, will have a whole lot more respect for you if you explain that you pulled back or changed something because financially, it just didn’t make a whole lot of sense. There is no shame in that.
I understand that making those kinds of decisions are hard. Believe me, I understand.
But at the end of the day, please remember that there is no value whatsoever in continuing to do something for the sake of managing perception or out of fear of what others may think of you. Do what you have to do for your business – and for your own sanity.
