A few months ago, we did an interesting exercise in one of our Accelerator meetings where we asked members to think through their teams (employees, contractors, vendors) and identify who was Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, or Informed (RACI) for various functions of the company. This is an incredibly valuable tool and often leads business owners to realize that they are holding on to way too much responsibility instead of delegating more to their team.
This led to a conversation about hiring and job design. One of the members described having a major breakthrough when it came to thinking about hiring that I want to share with you because it was so powerful.
HER EXACT WORDS WERE: “I AM DONE APOLOGIZING FOR THE JOB I AM OFFERING.”
Wow. I don’t know about you, but that really struck a chord with me.
Over and over again in my coaching sessions, I hear women doing exactly that. They are apologizing, feeling guilty for the role they need. They worry that a team member won’t want to take on new challenges. They worry that a candidate won’t be willing to work that many hours. They worry that they will never be able to find anyone so they decide they are willing to compromise on almost everything—job description, previous work experience, pay—in order to attract talent.
And guess what? Once you start compromising on what you want, you’ll never get it. So let’s all decide, right here and right now, to follow this woman’s advice.
Stop apologizing for the job you are offering!
Be clear and concise in what you want, how you want it done, what the deliverables should look like, and how you will measure success and provide feedback. If someone doesn’t want to take the job, they won’t. But don’t pre-decide for them. Be confident in your judgment and clear in what you are looking for. And then stick to it. You will be so much happier in the end.
