Beware the Month of September

It’s that time of year. I say it every year.

September is the toughest month of them all. It takes a toll on every single woman business owner that I know—well, I should clarify, those who live in the Northern Hemisphere.

I am nearly 10,000 miles away from the East Coast but I can feel the anxiety rising. The energy level is going up. People are returning from their vacations, and switching out of their summer modes. It is time to get back to work—and to get back to work in a big way before the fall and winter holidays are upon us. At the same time, events are popping up, calendars are filling, to-dos that people put off during the dog days of summer are resurfacing. School schedules are coming out—and God help you if you also manage a child’s sports schedule.

I was just speaking with a business owner whose business has been growing rapidly these last two years, and here is how this is showing up for her. She’s telling me:

1. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO TACKLE FIRST.
2. I DON’T THINK I CAN DO THIS; I’M JUST NOT EQUIPPED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO.
3. MAYBE I SHOULD PULL BACK OR REDIRECT THE WHOLE BUSINESS.

If you’re feeling the same way, here’s what you need to do about it:

You have got to focus. It’s not that you or she or any of us cannot do this, it’s just that there are too many things to do right now. It is completely overwhelming. And, in a state of overwhelm, often we lose our ability to focus and pick the single most important thing that needs to get done.

Ask yourself: What is mission critical? What is it that you must do or the rest of these things don’t matter? What problem must be solved first, no matter how many other things seem to be just as important?

Pick one. Pick the one thing that is mission critical.

Because frankly, if the one mission critical task doesn’t get done, it may not even matter if you do the other things.

So do that, or the rest of the things on your list will cloud your focus, sabotaging your ability to get through this.
