A few months ago I heard Melissa Bradley from Project 500 speak at an event. She told the audience that every good entrepreneur needs to have people who are pillows and people who are mirrors in their lives. The mirrors are the people who tell you the truth, even when it hurts. The pillows are the people who cushion the blows and make you feel better when things don’t go your way.
This raised so many questions in my head.
AM I A PILLOW OR A MIRROR?
OR DO I SERVE AS DIFFERENT ONES FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE?
WHO ARE MY MIRRORS AND PILLOWS?
AND ARE THEY IN BALANCE?
Clearly, you don’t want to have too many of one and not enough of the other.
It also got me thinking about how this metaphor applies to Her Corner. I truly believe that at Her Corner, you can find both a pillow and a mirror. Often our Accelerator members and private coaching clients come to us because they want an honest, unbiased opinion and they don’t believe they can get that anywhere else. For those women, we are the mirror. We challenge you to think bigger, to make hard decisions, to look at your financials honestly. We will never encourage you to do something unless we really believe it is a good idea.
And yet for those very same women—and many others we meet at our coffees and other events—we are often a pillow.
We strive to create a space where women can be honest with themselves and vulnerable. Where they can admit they are struggling and ask for help. Where they know we will be their biggest cheerleaders, no matter what.
Sometimes the hardest part of running a business can be boiled down to knowing if you need a pillow or a mirror at any given time. So take a minute and think about who plays those roles for you. And, if you notice that you have too many of one or not enough of the other, we are always here to help.
