I’m not sure how many of you know this, but when I built Her Corner, I built it for myself. I had no idea that it would turn into a community of 700 active members. I just wanted to have a way to connect personally with other women business owners so that we could work together on growing our businesses. Even as we’ve grown, I’ve always insisted that I participate in Groups as a member, not just a facilitator.
And wouldn’t you know it, even five years later, I’m still surprised at what I learn in these meetings!
Maybe I should just admit that I think I know a lot about my business and small businesses in general. It’s also possible that I assumed that I had things all figured out. But regardless of what I thought, it was my turn to speak with three other women in my working group during our monthly meeting. As I was explaining one of my challenges in my business (a typical one – there’s only one of me and limited ways to scale), I was lamenting the fact that I refuse to drive our prices higher just because of demand. Emphatically I reminded them that when I started Her Corner, it was because I hated the fact that 88% (now 82% by the way,) of women-owned businesses made less than $100,000 per year. They needed solutions that were affordable.
And wouldn’t you know it, one of my group members looked at me and said, “Well, you do have to charge more, but you also just said that you’re bringing in lots of sponsors these days, so why not charge more, but bring in companies to sponsor the accelerators so that a portion of the dues can be covered by them?”
And you know what? That was a really great idea. Why didn’t I think of that?
Oh right, because I’m one person. And that’s why I built Her Corner – to tap into the absolute power of collective intelligence.
And just like that I realized that I just received the gift of what I’d built. And I felt incredibly lucky and grateful – so grateful.
I want to hear from you: How has the power of collective intelligence surprised you – and helped your small business?
