This is part one of a three-part series that covers what it really takes for women business owners to succeed.
I grew up professionally surrounded by men. A lot of how I approach business was influenced by men, and I’m pretty happy about that. I learned a lot from them, and many of these men remain my closest friends, advisors and mentors.
One of the things I took away from those days, and something that is also part of my personality, is a belief that in order to succeed you really just have to want it, to really want it. And sometimes that means you kind of have to suck it up in order to succeed. I’m such a believer in the “suck it up” mantra that one of our Her Corner members even had a sticker made for me with this phrase.
But you know what? I was wrong. Really wanting it is only one piece of what I now believe is a three-part requirement for success.
How did I figure this out? Over the last three years I have spent every single month working one-on-one with women business owners, and what I realized is that while the whole “just do it” message is ingrained in our culture, that’s not all it takes – grit will get you far, but not the whole way. And if either of the other two requirements aren’t also in place and addressed, it doesn’t matter how hard you want it, or how hard you try. You won’t succeed.
Over the next two weeks, I’ll talk to you more about the requirements. Today, you’re getting a sneak peek.
- The first and most important requirement is that you have to believe. You literally have to believe that you can succeed. I’ll tell you how I see this show up, and which demographic in particular struggles with this.
- The second critical requirement is that you have to believe that you are worthy of succeeding. Wowsers – that is a big one! But let me tell you something: If you don’t think you’re worthy of success, you’ll put up some enormous road blocks that will slow – or stop – your path forward.
Once you believe you can succeed, and once you are convinced that you are worthy, well then yes, you do have to want it. Above all else, you have to really want to succeed. Because wanting it, and then persevering when the times are hard, are the final pieces of the “how to achieve success” puzzle.
