I know I’m not supposed to say this, but let’s be honest. We have all had those days. We ask ourselves whether this is worth it, whether we can succeed at building these businesses.
Personally I find that the Fall is always hard. I don’t know why, but time and again it is the period of the year when I feel the most stuck. I question everything I am doing with my business, and I have a hard time thinking strategically. Last year I blamed my new baby and lack of sleep, but this year I have just come to realize it’s like this every year. It doesn’t mean that business is bad, or that things aren’t going according to plan, it just means that I’m no longer as sure as I usually am about ‘why’ I am doing the things I am doing.
I’ve also learned that there are only two things to do when I feel this way. And I promise you that neither of them involves taking a day off or getting more sleep.
- The first thing I try to remember is that when business feels hard, when I start to question myself, it helps to remember that generally I’m about to have a breakthrough. For all of us when this happens, we’re working through the hard part of the journey in order to get to the other side. But what you have to remember to do during this hard part is this: the only strategy to focus on when you’re feeling this way is simply to not quit. Just keep at it. One day at a time.
And remember the old saying about courage. Courage isn’t about overcoming our fears; it’s about walking in the direction of the unknown, despite the fear, each and every day. Be courageous.
- The second thing you have to do when you feel this way is to remember who inspires you.We all need role models, whether in business or in life; people who we look up to and want to emulate. Reach out to those people when you need them. Ask them for some inspiration. Tell them you’re having a hard time.
And when they can’t be there, find the inspiration within you. Because chances are along the way you have been inspiring others; so you know what to say when someone else needs it, and the answers lie within you. Inspire yourself to not quit when no one else is around to help you.
Thanks for supporting Her Corner and in the mean time I’ll be looking forward to January when for some reason, things always seem to look better to me!
